Breeding budgies is an entertaining hobby for many bird enthusiasts, especially budgie lovers who want to bring new budgies into our world. However, breeding budgies doesn’t only bring joy and entertainment into this world, there are many common health problems that you should watch out for. In this article, we’ll talk about the common health problems that occur during breeding.
Budgies are prone to respiratory infections, which can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, or fungi. Symptoms of respiratory infections include sneezing, coughing, wheezing, nasal discharge, and labored breathing. To prevent respiratory infections, make sure that the breeding environment is clean and cool. If your budgies show signs of respiratory infections, seek vet care instantly.
Egg binding happens when the egg is stuck inside the female’s vent (cloaca) and the female is unable to lay it. Egg binding may happen due to stress. An egg bound budgie usually sits fluffed in a corner near her eggs, doesn’t drink, and strains to try to lay her eggs. Before taking your female budgie to the vet, try adding a few drops of mineral oil into the vent, then, wait for a little while and if the female doesn’t lay her eggs, take her to the vet.
Feather plucking is a common health problem in budgies that doesn’t only occur during breeding, it also occurs during normal times. When feather plucking occurs during breeding, it occurs because of stress. To prevent feather plucking (or treat it), provide an array of toys, a balanced diet, and lots of space for your breeding budgies. If you provide all this stuff to your budgies and they keep plucking their feathers, seek vet care.
Lack of nutrition can lead to stunted growth, weak bones, and a few other health issues. A few symptoms of malnutrition include weight loss, dull feathers, and lack of energy.
