Budgie Anatomy

Skeleton

Budgies have a flimsy skeleton. So, you must keep your budgie safe because its bones may easily break. Preventing obstacles in the way during flying and trimming your budgie’s wing feathers every six months will help protect your budgie’s bones from getting broken. Also, avoid holding your budgie or tying something around his legs as this may result in broken bones.

Beak Anatomy

A budgie’s beak consists of two parts, the upper jaw and lower jaw. The upper jaw in movable, but the lower jaw in unmovable. The beak is made out of keratin and has blood vessels inside the keratin cover, which means that they can feel the heat.

Additionally, budgies have tongues inside their beaks like most animals.

Cere

A budgie’s cere is located above the budgie’s beak and comes in different colors like blue in males and tan in females.

Cheek Patches & Throat Spots

Budgie mutations change the amount of cheek patches and throat spots. Some mutations even eliminate or change the color of them. Throat spots get place near the throat and are their common number is six while cheek patches can be white, gray, violet, blue, pale blue, or a mix of these colors.

Ear Coverts

Budgie ear coverts are feathers that cover a budgie’s ears. All budgies have ear coverts.

Mantle

A budgie’s mantle takes place between the top of the wings and the back of the neck.

Rump & Vent (Cloaca)

The rump is the area above the vent and the vent is the bottom area used for mating, egg-laying, and throwing out waste.

Eyes

Some budgies have red eyes due to the ino gene, but typical eyes are black without iris until they reach four to six months, but some budgies have faded or none at all.

Feet

Budgies typically have zygodactyl feet, which means that they have two toes forward and two toes backward, but some budgies have two toes forward and one toe backward. In that case, that isn’t called zygodactyl, these are normal bird feet.

Feathers

Budgies have feathers made out of keratin like the beak and nails. The following is a picture of a budgie’s feather’s parts:

Wings

Wings are significant for budgies as they protect them from predators and make them able to migrate. The wing is divided into many parts. The following is a picture of a wing with labels on each part:

Coverts

Coverts are feathers that cover other feathers and don’t play a role in budgies’ flying. They get their names from their locations on budgie’ bodies. For example, tail coverts got their name from their location at the tail, wing coverts got their name from the location at the wing, and so on.
