Foods That Budgies Should Never Eat

As a budgie owner, you are responsible for keeping your budgie both happy and healthy. So, you must make sure you give it a wholesome diet to make it live as long and happy as possible. In this article, we’ll dive into the ten foods that may cause harm to budgies.

Onions

One of the worst mistakes budgie owners do is give their budgies onions. This is a mistake that all budgie owners must avoid. Onions cause serious health problems to budgies and once given, your budgie will likely die. It’s highly recommended not to give your budgie onions or foods that contain onions in them because as said above, onions and foods that contain onions are likely to kill your budgie. To keep your budgie happy and healthy, avoid giving it onions foods that contain onions.

Garlic

The second mistake budgie owners do it give their budgies garlic. Garlic, being riskier than onions causes serious health problems to budgies and often kills them. Although, both cooked and uncooked garlic harms budgies, uncooked garlic does more harm to budgies. It’s highly not recommended to give them garlic as it will likely kill your budgie. The risks of giving garlic to your budgie aren’t worth it. So, let your pet live for long and don’t give it garlic or foods that contain garlic.

Mushrooms

For budgies, mushrooms are toxic. Keep in mind that mushrooms are toxic to budgies and must be avoided. Before even thinking of what you’ll give to your budgie, think of mushrooms as a taboo. Simply cross it out of your mind when deciding on feeding your budgie.

Avocados

Avocados are both wholesome and tasty for humans, but for budgies, they’re harmful. They contain substances that are toxic for budgies. These substances or toxins cause serious health problems in budgies if given in small amounts and if given in larger amounts, they probably kill budgies. The only way to keep your budgie safe is to avoid giving it avocado and if you want to eat avocados, don’t eat them in front of your budgie or it’ll also want some.

Dairy Products

Dairy products are healthy for humans, but not healthy for budgies. Not everything that’s healthy for people is healthy for budgies. The same is with dairy products, they’re healthy for people, but not healthy for budgies. Budgies can’t digest dairy products and once ingested, your budgie may get diarrhea or keep vomiting which is bad for the overall health of the budgie and shortens its life.

Chocolate

Chocolate is a tasty, but unhealthy treat. People may think about sharing their chocolate with their budgies. Budgie owners love sharing their foods with their budgies, so, they think about sharing chocolate with their budgies, but doing this may cause budgies to die or get sick.

Eggplants

Although eggplants are healthy for humans, they’re toxic to budgies. So, giving eggplants to your budgie or eating eggplants in front of it is bad. Eating eggplants in front of your budgie may lead to jealousy and want of eggplants, which is bad because we don’t want budgies to eat eggplants.

Raw Potatoes

Not only humans can’t eat raw potatoes, our pet budgies also can’t eat raw potatoes. They don’t taste pleasant for both humans and budgies, but it’s not only because of that. Raw potatoes are harmful to budgies. Budgies may consume a little amount of potatoes if they’re cooked, but giving raw potatoes to budgies is a taboo. Put that in mind because unfortunately, if you don’t, you may lose your feathered friend.

Meat

Budgies are herbivores and they can’t eat meat. All types of meats like chicken, lamb, fish, and even insects are forbidden for budgies. In the wild, budgies seldom eat insects and this means that insects aren’t healthy for them. So, you shouldn’t give your budgie meat or insects because as told above, budgies are herbivores and in the wild, they seldom eat insects.
